- Volunteer Exams Well Done (VEWD)
-
- VEWD is an exam maintenance program provided for use to
- ARRL VEs by James Heedles, WW1Y.
-
- We offer our sincerest thanks to Jim, and to the ARRL VE
- Teams in New Hampshire and the surrounding area who have tested
- this product over the past two years at ARRL/VEC test sessions,
- and especially at the 1993 New England Division Convention test
- session.
-
- What is VEWD?
-
- - VEWD is a MS-DOS computer software application designed to
- assist VEs with their administration of examinations and their
- examination record keeping.
-
- - VEWD will keep individual and team records of an ongoing
- examination session in real time, and will maintain session
- statistics.
-
- - VEWD will provide printed documentation including:
-
- * CSCEs - Yes, VEWD will complete all parts of an ARRL/VEC
- CSCE (excluding candidate and VE signatures) using
- tractor-fed CSCE stock (which is available from the
- ARRL/VEC) and a dot-matrix printer.
-
- * FCC Forms 610 - Yes, VEWD will complete FCC Form 610
- (excluding applicant and VE signatures, and excluding the
- Physician's Certification of Disability and Patient's Release) using
- either tractor-fed Form 610 stock (which is available from the
- ARRL/VEC) and a dot-matrix printer, or sheet fed on a laser
- printer.
-
- * ARRL/VEC Candidate Roster form
-
- * ARRL/VEC Test Session Report form
-
- - VEWD is very well written and is capable of performing many
- test session tasks.
-
- Unfortunately, VEWD will NOT make coffee!!!
-
- Things to consider when using VEWD:
-
- 1) The program requires a LOT of memory. If your PC does not
- have 640 kb or memory, you cannot use VEWD. When running VEWD,
- you can only have "command.com" and maybe some very small TSRs
- present. All remaining memory must be available for VEWD.
-
- 2) The program functions best when connected to two or more
- printers, one of which should be dot-matrix to print CSCEs. At
- least one dot-matrix printer is a minimum requirement to be able
- to print forms.
-
- 3) The program will generally demonstrate its greatest utility
- at larger than average test sessions, serving larger numbers of
- applicants, where keeping exam records straight becomes a great
- challenge.
-
- 4) Though the program will generate a complete file of data for
- electronic submission to the FCC (in the FCC's format), the FCC
- requires a VEC to screen the original hardcopy Form 610 and
- related examination documents before a VEC may forward the
- electronic data to the FCC. Therefore, even though you may email
- us your successful applicant data, you must still send us all
- used original hardcopy test session Candidate Roster and Test
- Session Report forms; all Form 610 applications; all written on
- answer sheets, code copy sheets; CSCE carbons; and copies of any
- CSCEs or FCC licenses presented by any applicant. Only
- successful applicants will have their application data submitted
- to FCC.
-
- 6) The program maintains a comprehensive data base from each
- session, remembering such things as names of towns when the zip
- code is entered, names of examiners who have participated in
- previous sessions, names of "regular" examiners. It will
- generate "thank you" letters to participating VEs and candidates.
- It will generate invitations to VEs who may wish to participate
- in upcoming sessions.
-
- 6) VEWD is distributed by the ARRL/VEC on one 3.5" or 5.25" high
- density floppy.
-
- 7) To use VEWD, your MS-DOS compatible PC must meet a minimum
- system requirement of 640 kb of conventional memory and MUST have
- a harddrive.
-
- If you have chosen to try VEWD, and if you want to become a registered user
- and receive any period updates or information notices, please send us your
- NAME, CALL SIGN and floppy disk size (3.5" or 5.25" high density) via
- E-mail to:
